They do not realize their puny resources are child's play compared to the geologic agents wind, water, ice, and ocean waves. Then there is the effect of the mantle heat that drives plate teconics, volcanism and faulting that continually modify Earth's surface features but so slowly that mans's short lifetime doesn't reveal the true magnitude of nature's forces.
