Since I don't want to live in an ice age I am quite content that global temps might be going the other way. IF the average temperature rises the US and the world will do well by it. More rain, longer growing seasons, shorter flu seasons, more crops, more food, more water. Hmmm, I'm having trouble finding anything wrong with this picture.... End of world hunger and disease? Does this scenario threaten those who speak liberally but benefit from having a captive lower class to keep them in power? Ah, you are beginning to THINK! The 2011 average temperature data point was below one of the highest points in the data set (the 1998 ave temp) which was a record high at the time. The 2011 temperatures are still way up there. Look at the graph - while the temps fluctuate annually, the upward trend is still present. And sure, the author points out that "If you start at about 650 million years ago, when the Earth was covered pole to pole in ice, you can say current data show we are in a “general trend” of rising temperatures." However, our society is based upon a more temperate climate. If humans AREN'T causing it, we may have to start thinking about what we'll do if (foolish mortals that we are) temps do continue ot climb... Does anybody realize that man-made CO2 consists far less than 0.02 per cent of the atmosphere? Clouds and a myriad of other NATURAL circumstances determine the climate. At some point in the past the planet was a molten mass of material which cooled enough to form a solid crust and even cooled enough so that water vapor cooled and condensed to form gigantic oceans. These phase changes emitted enormous amounts of Energy.
