The freedom to move about and go in directions that are beneficial to an individual along with ownership of private property are why our country has historically prospered. To yoke our citizens to publicly subsidized transportation systems is diametrically opposed to individual freedom and will help speed our transformation into an impoverished, socialistic society.

What Mr. Loomis conveniently ignores, quite possibly because he doesn’t agree, is the American concept of individual freedom and personal choice. This is nothing but off-the-charts conservative rant direct from the ultra-libertarian O’Toole. His shorts are all in a knot because his ideology says taxpayers shouldn’t subsidize transit. Fine! Then he should also insist that the airlines begin paying for the air traffic control system instead of the federal government. And let them also pay to build and maintain airports instead of state and local governments. Surely that is just another form of subsidy. The fact is, ALL forms of public transportation are subsidized – from airlines to interstate highways and right on down to bike lanes and sidewalks … and, yes, that includes vital transit systems. It’s called an integrated national transportation system, Mr. O’Toole, and all modern, civilized societies have one.

Utter nonsense!
