Let's not loose sight of the latest from HECO: “Currently, the value of adding more customer-sited renewable energy and using less oil is considered to outweigh this lost contribution to fixed cost.” I'm curious if a closer look at HECO's application for an increase in rates showed that solar is so much cheaper than electricity from oil that all ratepayers are benefiting even if customers who install solar zero out their bills. If the revenue loss is less than the benefits of solar, ratepayers are money ahead.

"But oil has nothing to do with electrical generation. It’s not used in generators to produce electricity. "

Colette...you are surely not talking about Hawaii...which depends on oil for 80-90% of its electrical generation.

This from the Hawaiian Electric Company website...

"Over 90 percent of all the energy used in Hawaii for electricity, surface and air transportation comes from imported fossil fuels, mostly oil but some coal."

But oil has nothing to do with electrical generation. It's not used in generators to produce electricity. Hawaii is also host to a very large wind turbine cemetery. As for PV solar panels, these are only 15% efficient at best therefore the need for electrical generation can never be met by these intermittent, unreliable, non-dispatchable forms of electrical generation. Considering the exorbitant rates solar generation is receiving based on ratepayer and taxpayer support, how could the overall rates for electricity not increase.

Marita...Unfortunately, you read an early version of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser article, "Rate increase blamed on sun power." The paper soon admited that its numbers were off by 10x dues to wrong figures provided by HECO. In fact, the added cost to rate payers claimed by HECO is $0.30/month on Oahu and $1.00/month on Maui and Kauai. Read this updated (corrected) version: http://www.staradvertiser.com/businesspremium/20120206__Rate_increase_blamed_on_sun_power.html?id=138763524

The sad thing is that HECO wants to blame the solar energy industry on its need for a rate increase. The fact of the matter is that the reason Hawaii's electricity costs so much is because we depend on imported oil for about 80-90% of our electricity. And to make matters worse...it's imported foreign oil...as only 4% of the oil burned by HECO for electricity comes from the U.S. (Alaska). 96% of the oil comes from China, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, etc. In otherwords, American money going to foreign countries.

Another inaccuracy is the claim that people with solar PV do not help pay the costs of maintaining the electrical grid. That is not true. No one with solar PV in Hawaii is 100% free of the grid. They all get HECO bills (albiet at a greatly reduced cost) and those bills include a minimum charge for system maintenance.

You may not believe in global warming...but the need to wean our country off oil has more to do with economic and national security than it does with sea levels.
