CEI comments on proposed New Jersey CO2 rule

The proposed rule is a conceptual muddle. Logically, DEP cannot classify CO2 as an air contaminant unless it is prepared to apply the same designation to water vaporthe atmospheres main greenhouse gas. Presumably, DEP has no intention to cap steam from nuclear power plants, or evaporation from public green spaces, but it should be aware of the regulatory folly that its argument implicitly demands.

Live Chat with Dr. David Henderson: IPCC emissions scenarios; 'Corporate social responsibility'

Dr. David Henderson is currently a Visiting Professor at the Westminster Business School. He is a former chief economist of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). In 2003, Prof. Henderson, with co-author Ian Castles, issued a scathing critique of the future emissions scenarios propogated by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). His book on so-called "corporate social responsibility," The Role of Business in the Modern World, was recently published in America.

Cooler Heads Hill Briefing: Are the UN's global warming forecasts based on faulty economics?

In 2001, the Third Assessment Report of the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predicted that the global mean temperature would be between 2.5 and 10.4o higher by 2100. David Henderson and Ian Castles have produced a powerful critique of the economic assumptions used in the IPCCs scenarios.

Air Board's greenhouse rule: Raw deal for dealers

On September 24, Californias Air Resources Board (CARB) adopted a plan to regulate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from new cars and trucks starting in 2009. To sell cars in California, automakers will have to reduce fleet average GHG emissions by 22 percent in 2012 and 30 percent in 2016. CARBs rulemaking is a raw deal for auto dealers in California and any other state that mimics Californias plan.

IEA releases world energy outlook

The latest edition of the International Energy Agencys World Energy Outlook, released in Paris on October 26, predicts that in the absence of changed policies or accelerated use of new technology world energy demand will increase by 59 percent from now to 2030. About 85 percent of that increase will be supplied by fossil fuels, and two-thirds of the new demand will come from the developing world, especially India and China.

Niger turns to coal to save rainforest

The sub-Sahelian state of Niger has seen authorities turn to promoting the use of coal in an effort to halt deforestation (Inter-Press Service, Oct. 20). Wood is the primary energy source in Niger, accounting for 95 percent of energy needs. This means that the country consumes two billion kilograms of firewood each year.

British price rises reveal premium aspect of renewables

Environmentally-conscious electricity consumers in the United Kingdom have been surprised to see their bills going up by 10 percent as a result of rising oil and gas prices. The price rises have been condemned as profiteering by the opposition Conservative Party (a believer in global warming alarmism). Energy spokesman Laurence Roberston told the Times (Oct. 17), It is unbelievable. It sounds a bit of a con to me.
