Editorial Cartoon Backfires

by Paul Chesser, Heartland Institute Correspondent on May 26, 2009

Unless I’m totally misunderstanding the sketch of today’s editorial cartoon by the Washington Post‘s Tom Toles, which unimaginatively illustrates climate change “deniers” like a head-in-the-sand ostrich, he also also has drawn a huge sun which apparently is throwing intense heat on the “deniers” (which are supposed to be Republicans, I guess).

But in drawing the sun Toles has unwittingly made a case for solar activity being a stronger climate driver than greenhouse gases. I think Harvard solar scientist Willie Soon would love it.

Most alarmists don't seem to understand the position they support, so this is no surprise.

Ten years of stable or falling temps are we're told it's still warming. Did somebody redefine the word warming? They don't know the difference between is warmer and is becoming warmer (warming).

It's colder today in Toronto than it was at the top of Kicking Horse all last week. That's where I spent my week off so this is coming from a first hand account not from climatological records. Kicking Horse is in Golden B.C. in the Purcell Mountain Range next to the Rockies. The summit is at 2450 m or 8033 ft. and the afternoon temperatures hovered near freezing under a bluebird sky with hardly a breeze blowing. They could have used some fresh snow but the coverage was great and the terrain is incredible. That's why it's one of my favorite spots to board.

Not to worry, I brought some of that warm air back with me. We'll start to feel it tomorrow afternoon after a chilly start. Temperatures will bottom out in the double digits but get close to freezing under afternoon sun. A baby clipper could bring in a few late day flurries Wednesday or early Thursday, nothing major though. The system I'm keeping my eye on is slated for Friday and should have plenty of juice. This one is temperature and track dependant. We could get some rain mixed with snow which would dip the totals but be prepared for a sloppy lead-in to the weekend. I'll keep you updated as this system develops further.
